When you think about scheduling your yearly family photos, you probably picture a classic family session, but have you ever thought about fair family photos? If not, you definitely should, because how adorable and unique are these images?!
Fair photo sessions are hands down some of the most challenging sessions I’ve ever photographed. Before I began offering family sessions professionally, I used to attend the fair with photography groups just to practice shooting at night. I’d bring my tripod and experiment with long shutter speeds, movement, and constantly changing lights. Capturing motion and energy in an image is so much fun, and that experience has played a huge role in how I photograph families today.
Here in Charleston, the Coastal Carolina Fair takes place every year during the last week of October through the first week of November. It’s held at the Ladson Fairgrounds in Ladson, South Carolina, about 30 minutes from Downtown Charleston, and it makes such a colorful and playful backdrop for family photos.
When we were stationed in North Dakota, I even brought my Lensbaby Velvet lens to photograph my son and his friend at the fair. You can check them out here That session was incredibly challenging, but it taught me so much. That kind of practice truly prepared me to handle the fast-paced, unpredictable nature of a family photo session at the fair. From constantly changing light to photographing from about an hour before sunset through blue hour and into the evening, it keeps me on my toes. Add in the crowds, and it’s definitely not a session I recommend doing on a weekend. These sessions also require extra editing work to remove people from the background.
Because of this, setting the right expectations is so important. I always make sure my clients understand that fair sessions are energetic and a little wild…in the best way. I don’t usually follow a set plan or route; I work best staying flexible and making decisions on the fly as the session unfolds.
For fellow Charleston photographers who might be reading this and considering a fair session, don’t forget that the fair does not allow non-clear bags. I learned this the hard way and had to turn around and leave some of my gear behind, bringing in only what I could carry or wear. It’s also important to stay aware of your surroundings and avoid blocking walkways, it’s fast-paced, and you have to move quickly.
One of my favorite parts of this session was hearing Julie (mom) say she plans to use these photos in her kids’ playroom. How fun is that? These images are joyful, colorful, and full of personality perfect for a space meant for play and memories.
